Before you start your post:
You want to think about a theme (or themes) for the post. Are you going to post about something specific or general? This will help you plan the post. If it’s long and intricate, even sketch out an outline. It’s helpful to get an idea beforehand, believe me.

Step 1. The Title
This is an important step in the post construction, mainly because the title is a link on your site, and is part of the url of that post’s page. So you want something that helps with SEO – Like, if you have a fancy toast website, something like “Why ToastMasters is the Best toast in Houston, TX”. See how that works? Not only do you have a location, you have your branding, and “the best toast” so there’s a few different hits there.

Step 2. Write, write, write!
This is easier said than done, usually. I know I have struggled myself staring at a blank screen for hours before something popped in. However, if you did your pre-post work, you should be good to go (generally speaking). So, write. A good blog post is at least 250 words long. You want to add targeted keywords in certain sentences – let’s say you are writing a blog post about honey wheat toast. “Our honey wheat toast starts with artisan whole grain breads.” “We’re sure you’ll think our toast is the best honey wheat toast in Texas” etc.. Because those keywords bring you to step 3, once you’re done with the blog post.

Step 3. Insert Links!
You will repeat this process for every link you want to insert. You generally want to have three for about every 250 words.
Step 3A: Highlight the keyword you want to link, then click the link picture – if you are using the visual editor, which I’m sure if you need this tutorial, you are. (I am using “wordpress tutorials” from this post.

Step 3B: Put in the url to your site (or where you want to link to on your site specifically). Then for the title, put in the same keyword or a similar one you are linking.

And that’s all is to it! Then you have the link inserted. Just do that for every link you have!

Step 4. Categories
Categories are important for search engines too. To the right, you’ll see the categories. In case you don’t, here’s where you’ll find it.

You want categories relevant to your post, so if you are a toast website posting about honey wheat toast, then you would add categories like “honey wheat toast” “wheat toast” etc. It’s pretty self explanatory there – if you don’t have that category already, just click “+Add New Category” and a box will appear below. Type in the keyword/category, then click on add new category. Parent Category should be defaulted. If you’ve used the category before, it should be in the list and you just check it.

Step 5. Insert Photos!
This can seem intimidating, and I completely understand. Once you get the hang of it, however, you’ll laugh. I promise.
Step 5A: Click the Upload/Insert button at the top of the post menu

Then find the image on your computer. once you do, upload and it’ll bring up a new screen.

Title the picture something relevant to your post and in the alt section just put a keyword relevant to the post. Then you can alter the alignment and size however you like for your post, then clcik insert into post. And there it is! Hooray.

Step 6. Time to Publish!
A wonderful thing about WordPress is that you can schedule posts to be live whenever. That means you can write up a bunch of them at once then just pick when they go out. If you are busy and like to block off a chunk of time to do this, then it’s a great asset for you.

If you want to change when it publishes, click “Edit” next to Publish immediately. You can then set the date to whatever you wish. When you are done with that, hit Publish! And hooray, you are done!
